Feb 22, 2010 – Painting A Day Project

Bear Lake

Bear Lake Shore

Bear Lake, 9,475 feet altitude.   “….so named because my Granddad Ferguson saw a bear there while hunting deer and elk.  He took a shot at the bear, but didn’t wait to see if he hit it.  That was probably a good idea since he was using an old muzzle-loading rifle.”  –Sally Ferguson, 1912.

I decided to do another landscape today.  I’m having some fun with those….they’re painted in a little more “loose” style than what I normally paint, a little different color palette, great practice for plein air painting, and besides, I get to take a much-needed “mini-vaca”.  I’ve had my fair share of stress lately and going to my “happy places” is a great way to cope, don’t ya think? 🙂

One of those “happy places” is Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.  It is easy to get to, and can be very peaceful, even when it is super busy.  There are some huge boulders that are just begging for someone to stop, relax, and enjoy the view.  One of the best times to be at the lake is just before sundown.  The crowds are dispersing, you can find a prime boulder to sit on and just watch the sun set.  Sooo peaceful….everything just feels right in the world during those last few moments of daylight.  I hope you can get even just a pinch of that feeling from today’s painting.
